Genesis #2 is an original field record from the 2023 New York ice storm that inspired the Stasis series. This work documents the atmospheric event where a field specimen was naturally encased in ice during an overnight freeze.

By capturing the flora in this state, Sebastian Mader arrests its beauty and the elements of its life cycle—water and gas—at a specific point in time. This mirrors the technical function of photography: both the ice and the camera serve to capture and hold a moment that would otherwise disappear. As a foundational image of the study, Genesis #2 represents the original inspiration for the preservation process.

    Provenance & Technical History +

    The Ice Storm (March 2023)
The primary field record captured in New York following an atmospheric freeze. This specific image served as a catalyst that prompted Sebastian Mader to move the inquiry into a controlled studio environment.

    The Studio Archive (2024)
The observations from Genesis #2 led to the broader Stasis study. The process was transitioned to the studio to replicate the initial field findings, allowing for a more precise exploration into the transition of specimens into a state of stasis.

The Definitive Studio Edition (2026 – Present)
The final archival standard for the studio. Produced on Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta (325 gsm) using pigment technology for superior tonal depth and 100+ year longevity. Hand-signed and numbered on the front margin to certify its status in the permanent Studio Archive.

Archival documentation of a vertical triptych installation from Sebastian Mader's Liquid Study. Displayed in a contemporary Antwerp living space with floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Materiality: Archival pigment on Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta.
