Liquid Study
Liquid Study
Kinetic Transition | Fluid States
The Extension
Liquid Study is a deliberate extension of Sebastian Mader’s exploration of water. Having documented the biological stagnation of specimens held in ice, this series transitions the inquiry into the fluid state. It is an exploration of motion rather than suspension, moving from the crystalline shell of Stasis to the unpredictable architecture of liquid—a necessary progression in exhausting the conversation between matter and time.
The Reductive Method: Throughout Mader’s practice, the methodology is defined by reduction. By limiting the composition to a core set of repeating elements, the work focuses on the minute facets of a singular subject. In Liquid Study, isolating the fluid medium allows for a total exploration of its graphic potential. Unlike a static still life, these works document a state of constant evolution; the liquid is never the same twice.
The Paradox of Time
While Stasis suggested a fixed state, it was ultimately defined by the transition of melting—a slow, heavy motion. Liquid Study removes the ice shell to experience this time transition directly through kinetic energy. Drawing on a background in technical liquid photography, Mader utilizes light as a structural tool to capture the unrepeatable geometry of fluid, documenting a brief equilibrium that cannot be replicated.
